Today was one of those typically lovely spring days that make you glad you live here! It was 9 degrees and sunny during the day, but be very careful – it could be MINUS 7 tonight ! Do not be fooled by the lovely sunshine! Last year, I lost some tomato plants to a severe frost on 5th April – and they were in the greenhouse. The saying “Cast no clout ’til May be out” is very true. We can’t be sure of anything until the end of April.
That said, this is the perfect time of year to get ahead of yourself (or try, at least). The new weed seedlings haven’t made an appearance, and any weeds which have overwintered won’t put up much of a fight when you wrestle them out. Today I spent a few hours working on a south-facing flower bed which was bathed in warm spring sunshine. It took about 2 hours, but it was quality time shared with the cat, our chooks and the almost tame birds which inhabit our garden. That reminds me – please don’t forget the birds – they will soon be planning their families, and will need a constant, reliable source of food. Only start feeding them if you know you can continue. They will start to rely on you. But what could be nicer? We have our own wood pigeons, robins, blackbirds, etc. and they are lovely to see every day – they are there from first light of the morning until dusk.
